Chapter 2 — Hereditary Principalities
A prince who inherits stability has less to fear — and less to prove.
Summary
Machiavelli's treatment of hereditary principalities is the shortest in the book — deliberately so. The analysis is compact because the difficulties are small. A prince whose family has ruled a state for generations benefits from accumulated legitimacy: the population does not need to be persuaded that his rule is natural or just; the argument has already been made by his ancestors. He has only to avoid the worst mistakes.
The practical standard Machiavelli sets is notably undemanding: a prince of average powers who does not transgress the customs of his ancestors and deals prudently with circumstances as they arise will maintain his position. Even extraordinary external pressure — such as the attacks on the Duke of Ferrara by Venice in 1484 and by Pope Julius in 1510 — can be withstood if the ruler is well established in his dominion. Long tenure creates a structural advantage that short tenure cannot replicate.
The chapter's brevity signals where Machiavelli's real interest lies. Hereditary principalities are stable by default; they require management, not genius. The interesting political problems — the ones that require the kind of analysis that justifies writing a treatise — belong to new principalities, where legitimacy must be created rather than inherited, and where the techniques of holding power are genuinely demanding. Everything from Chapter 3 onward is, in effect, the expansion of that harder case.
