Chapter 1 — How Many Kinds of Principalities There Are
Before prescribing, Machiavelli classifies — and the classification determines everything that follows.
Summary
Machiavelli begins with the most fundamental division: all states are either republics or principalities. He notes that republics have been treated elsewhere — a reference to the Discourses on Livy, the longer work he was writing simultaneously — and confines himself to principalities. This narrowing of scope is itself a methodological statement: the book is not a universal theory of politics but a practical guide to a specific form of rule.
The taxonomy that follows is built on the logic of difficulty. Hereditary principalities, long settled under a single family, are easier to hold because the population is accustomed to obedience and the prince's legitimacy is not in question. New principalities are harder: the prince has enemies among those he displaced and cannot fully satisfy those who helped him rise. Mixed principalities — territories annexed to an existing state — present their own complications, which Chapter 3 will examine at length.
The final variables are means of acquisition: one's own arms, another's arms, fortune, and ability. Each method produces a different relationship between the prince and his state, a different set of obligations and vulnerabilities. The taxonomy is not decorative. It is the analytical framework within which every subsequent argument will be positioned, and the four-way distinction between means of acquisition will govern much of the book's central argument about what kinds of power are stable and what kinds are not.
