Matthew 7

The judicial language that opens chapter 7 — judge not, that you be not judged — has been among the most often cited and most often misread verses in the gospel. The context makes the meaning clear: the prohibition is against the kind of judgment that ignores the log in one's own eye while removing specks from others'. The following verse calls for self-examination before offering correction, and the verse after that instructs not to give holy things to dogs or cast pearls before swine — which is itself a form of judgment about who is in what condition. The prohibition is not an absolute ban on moral discernment but a ban on the hypocritical variety. Matthew's Jesus does not lack the capacity for sharp judgment; the seven woes of chapter 23 are the evidence.

The sermon's closing parable of the two builders is the formal seal of the first of the five discourses. Each discourse closes with a when Jesus had finished formula, and the parable itself names the condition for standing: hearing these words and doing them. The architectural image — the house on rock versus the house on sand — has a directness that needs no interpretation. What the parable adds to all the preceding teaching is the eschatological frame: the storm that reveals which foundation holds is coming, and the only relevant question at that point is whether the hearer has built. The crowd's astonishment at his authority concludes the discourse on the exact note the discourse had opened: the authority of one who speaks in his own name rather than by appeal to predecessors.
