Three parables close the Olivet discourse: ten virgins and the oil at midnight; talents doubled or buried; the Son of Man separating the sheep from the goats on the basis of mercy shown.
Summary
The parable of the ten virgins is a parable of preparedness under uncertainty, and its central feature is not the foolishness of the five but the impossibility of borrowing preparedness at the last moment. The oil cannot be shared in sufficient quantity because it is not a commodity that transfers; it represents something intrinsic to the person — the readiness that has been cultivated or neglected over time. The shut door and the I do not know you echo the warning of the Sermon on the Mount at 7:23, where those who have prophesied in Jesus' name are told the same thing. Readiness is not a credential; it is a condition.
The sheep and goats judgment in 25:31-46 is one of the most ethically searching passages in the gospel and one of the most debated. The criterion of judgment — did you feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the prisoner? — is presented without reference to belief, confession, or religious practice, and both the sheep and the goats are surprised by the verdict. The identification of the Son of Man with the least of these my brothers is the passage's theological crux: whatever the referent of the least of these (whether all suffering humanity or, more narrowly, suffering disciples of Jesus), the claim that the judge of all the earth is encountered in the vulnerable and overlooked is the most demanding ethical implication of the gospel's Christology. The parable has been the foundation of Christian social ethics and the constant warrant for charitable work directed toward the poor and the prisoner.
