Matthew 14

The feeding of the five thousand is the only miracle recorded in all four gospels, and in Matthew it follows immediately after the narration of John's death. The juxtaposition of Herod's banquet — where a prophet is killed to gratify a woman's resentment and a ruler's vanity — and the wilderness meal where Jesus feeds five thousand with surplus remaining is deliberate. The two banquets represent two kinds of power, two kinds of abundance, two kinds of host. Matthew's account of the feeding emphasizes the disciples' role: Jesus gives them the loaves and fish to distribute. The twelve baskets of fragments left over evoke the twelve tribes and the manna in the wilderness, placing the event in the Exodus typology that runs through the gospel.

Peter walking on water and sinking is an episode found only in Matthew and is one of the gospel's characteristic portraits of Peter: bold enough to step out of the boat, faithful enough to respond to the invitation, but distracted by the wind, doubting, and requiring rescue. The word translated doubt (distazō) appears only twice in the New Testament and both times in Matthew: here and in 28:17, where some of the eleven doubt even at the resurrection appearance. Matthew's Peter is the exemplar of the community the gospel addresses — called to walk on water, capable of it in the moment of faith, prone to sink when fear takes over, rescued by the one he doubted, invited again. The confession that follows — truly you are the Son of God — is the community's confession, not yet Peter's individual confession (which comes at Caesarea Philippi).
