Summary
Section 10 proposes a practical reflex for every event that arrives. Rather than reacting to the surface of a situation, turn inward first and ask: what capacity do I have to meet this? The question is not rhetorical — it has specific answers. An attractive person who catches your attention calls for self-restraint. Hardship calls for endurance. An insult calls for patience. The capacity is always there because it is always yours; no external event can remove your ability to respond to it with the appropriate resource.
The instruction is to form this as a habit — to make the inward turn automatic, so that it happens before the reaction, not after. The person who has formed this habit is not immune to events; they still encounter attractive people, hardships, and insults. But they encounter them differently. The first move is not emotional reaction but identification: what capacity is being called for here? That pause, and the naming, changes the structure of the encounter.
Section 10 complements Section 5 (it is not the event but the judgment) by making the insight practical in real time. Section 5 tells you where the disturbance lives. Section 10 gives you the reflex to interrupt it before it takes hold. Together they describe the moment-to-moment practice of Stoic attention: event arrives, turn inward, identify the capacity, apply it.
