Late on the same night, Capulet promises Paris his daughter's hand. The wedding is on Thursday.
Summary
A room in Capulet's house, late on the same Monday night. Paris has come to the Capulet house to pay his respects after Tybalt's death and is on the point of leaving. Capulet, sleepless and grieving, has been thinking. He stops Paris at the door. "Sir Paris, I will make a desperate tender / of my child's love." This is what he means: Paris will marry Juliet, and the wedding will not wait. Today is Monday — let it be Thursday.
Lady Capulet, who has been listening, mildly protests. Thursday is too soon; the household is in mourning; Juliet has had no warning. Capulet brushes the objection aside. The marriage will be small and quiet because of Tybalt's death — "we'll keep no great ado, a friend or two" — but it will happen. He charges his wife to go up to Juliet's chamber at once, before bed, and tell the girl what is now arranged. Paris, transparently delighted, agrees that Thursday is none too soon. He kisses Capulet's hand and goes. The Capulets follow toward bed.
What the audience knows, and the Capulets do not, is that at this exact hour Juliet is in her bedroom with Romeo. They have spent the rope-ladder night in each other's company; dawn is coming; they will part within hours. The Paris match has just been promised. The dramatic irony is among the cruelest in Shakespeare: the play has only just married the lovers and has, in the same five minutes, married Juliet to a different man. The clock for the rest of the play has now started: Thursday morning. Friday at the latest.
