Part 6, Chapter 4 — Svidrigailov continues

A second tavern. Svidrigailov keeps talking. He has overheard Raskolnikov's confession to Sonya through the wall.

Summary

Svidrigailov has stood up to leave the first tavern; Raskolnikov, holding him by the sleeve, asks for one more half-hour. They walk together into a second tavern, smaller and dingier, on a side-street near the canal. Svidrigailov, settling in across from Raskolnikov with a fresh glass, tells him plainly what has been hinted. He has been living, since arriving in Petersburg, in a furnished room in the same building as Sonya's. The wall between his room and hers is a thin partition of plaster and lath. The plaster carries voices.

He had heard, on the evening Raskolnikov came to Sonya's, every word of the confession of the murders. He repeats two phrases verbatim, to prove it. He has the means to put Raskolnikov on the gallows or in the mines with one short letter to Porfiry. He says he will not write the letter. He has decided not to. He has no use for Raskolnikov's life. What he wants is Dunya. He wants her to come to him of her own accord, on the terms of the letter; he says he has not decided what he will do if she comes; he will not seek her out if she does not.

Raskolnikov has understood throughout that Svidrigailov is telling him the truth and that the truth is a problem. Dunya, with the letter in her possession, will come — Raskolnikov knows his sister; she will not let her brother's life rest on a stranger's good will. The interview must be intercepted. The chapter ends with Svidrigailov rising, paying his bill, and leaving. Raskolnikov, after a moment, leaves too. He follows Svidrigailov at a distance through the streets toward the room where the meeting will happen.
