Part 5, Chapter 1 — Luzhin nurses his wound

Luzhin, in his lodgings the morning after, plans his revenge. The plan involves a hundred-rouble note and a young woman he has been told is a prostitute.

Summary

The morning after the broken engagement, Luzhin sits at the table in the lodgings he shares with Andrei Lebezyatnikov, his old ward and now his flatmate. He has not slept. He has been refining his sense of grievance. The loss of Dunya is, in his accounting, an injury. He has spent considerable money on the family, has condescended to elevate them, and has been thrown out by an ungrateful brother who has poisoned the women against him.

He has decided on a plan. He will ruin Raskolnikov in the eyes of his mother and sister — and of Razumikhin, who has clearly become an alternative suitor — by exposing Raskolnikov's closest connection in Petersburg as a thief. The connection is Sonya: a known prostitute, present at Raskolnikov's sickbed, recently invited to his garret in the women's presence. If Sonya can be publicly proven a thief, Pulcheria Alexandrovna and Dunya will see what kind of company their son keeps; Raskolnikov's authority will be broken. He sends a polite note inviting Sonya to call on him. He intends to give her a small sum for the funeral expenses, and while pressing the money on her, to slip a hundred-rouble note into her pocket without her noticing. Later, when the loss is discovered, the note will be found on her; the entire dinner-party at Katerina Ivanovna's will be witness.

Lebezyatnikov is in and out of the room as Luzhin works through it. Lebezyatnikov is full of ideas about the abolition of marriage and the rationality of communes. He thinks Luzhin is a fool. He is, the chapter takes care to establish, a slightly comic figure with sound moral instincts. He will not, in the event, allow what is about to happen. The chapter ends with Sonya's footstep on the landing.
